On Wednesday, May 25 at 6 pm the Encinitas City Council will consider our request for extending the “no parking during school drop off and pick up” area on the north side of Cereus Street. Please come out and show your support of this important safety improvement for our school and neighborhood.
If you can’t make it in person, please feel free to write a letter of support to email@example.com. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Paul Ecke Central Traffic and Safety Committee (PEC TSC) at firstname.lastname@example.org.
As everyone who has ever dropped off or picked up their child from Paul Ecke Central knows, traffic on Cereus Street is a nightmare. When the street is fully parked, it becomes a de facto one way road. Cars cannot safely turn from Hygeia Avenue to Cereus Street because of visibility issues. Cars have to “bob and weave” in order to make it through the bottleneck. With over 150 cars passing through this street every morning and afternoon, this is not acceptable. In addition, many parents are hesitant to let their children bike or walk this route because of the dangerous situation that this traffic congestion causes.
Currently a portion of the north side of the street has a “no parking during school drop off and pick up.” So the PEC TSC has worked hard over the last several months to collaborate with neighbors, city staff, parents and the administration to extend this “no parking during school drop off and pick up” for the entire north side of Cereus Street. This only removes four parking spots during a small 30 minute window when school is in session. However, it makes Cereus Street a two way street again during drop off and pick up — something we desperately need!
The City of Encinitas Traffic and Public Safety Commission unanimously approved our request at their March meeting. The final step is for the City Council to approve the extension of the “no parking during school drop off and pick up” to all of Cereus Street.
