They are excited to launch many new initiatives during the 2019-2020 school year and really engage the students. And while many of the green actions will take place at school, they would love parents to get involved as much as possible in green practices at home too! One area that families can really make a difference is in reducing waste – especially when it comes to plastics.

It has been estimated that on average a school-age child using a disposable lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per school year. That equates to 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for just one average-size elementary school [Source:].

Here are some simple, inexpensive suggestions for reducing lunch box waste:

  • Put food in reusable containers inside your child’s lunch box – washable/reusable snack/sandwich bags, BPA free water bottles, insulated thermos, and dishwasher safe “bento boxes” are super convenient items for on-the-go parents
  • Buy food in bulk instead of individual wrapped when possible to reduce “snack” wrapper waste
  • Check out useful resources for reusable lunchware. A few are Mighty Nest, Amazon, Bentology, and Ukonserve
